Pilot is also developing websites for the mobile web - for smartphones and tablet computers. In many cases it is not sufficient that the site simply loads on a mobile browser, it has to have a layout responsive to the mobile browser platform, and often different content in anticipation of a mobile user's needs.
For example someone may look up your website on their phone to simply find your office address. In this case we build a few pages specifically for the mobile experience (i.e. "contact us" and "about us"). If the web server detects that a visitor is using a mobile browser then it loads the mobile version of the "contact us" page as the landing page. The "contact us" page has an integrated Google map, phone number and contact email.

(Now for the big picture), it is estimated that by 2014 more people will be connecting to the Internet using their phones than with their PCs. This suggests that instead of a few key pages, websites will need to be completely re-built for the mobile web. The key ingredients of responsive web design are fluid grids, flexible images, and media queries, but it also requires a different way of thinking. Developing mobile apps for the iPhone and Android phones has become a must-have for marketers, but the tide is beginning to turn towards web apps developed to work on a mobile browser.
The benefits of a web app are obvious:
- they will work on all smartphones (iPhone, Android and Blackberry).
- they can be linked to a traditional content management system (CMS), so the marketing department can update them immediately, and not at the whim of the developer.
- they are quicker and less expensive to develop.
- they do not need to be uploaded to and approved by the Apple App Store...
